Sr. Optical Engineer

Location: Reston , VA

Job Summary

A Senior Optical Engineer will lead engineering teams in the development of complex processing capabilities in support of national security for our IC customer.

Provide advisory and assistance support to the Space and Counterspace Division within Science and Technology Directorate. Typical support includes Systems Engineering and Technical Assistance (SETA) and advisory and assistance support related to sensor technologies.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • A qualified candidate will perform the following duties and responsibilities, but are not limited to:
  • Provide expertise for design of optical system analysis.
  • Support the design and operation of all types of optical technologies various phenomenologies using different sensor platforms.
  • Review, edit and enhance vendor documentation to support operating electro-optic systems, such as operating manuals and concepts of operations.
  • Operate prototype electro-optic systems.
  • Write results documentation including recommendations on systems parameters settings necessary to improve the performance of the system.
  • Support program development documentation such as system requirements documents, concepts of operations, interagency support agreements, operational security plans, deployment plans, and test reports.
  • Travel as necessary to vendor facilities to evaluate system checkout, perform security accreditation, and provide independent documentation to assess the performance and capabilities of vendor developed electro-optical systems.
  • Attend conferences and perform literature reviews, after which he/she will provide a written assessment on the current state-of-the-art with recommendations for future courses of action for the government.

Knowledge and Skills

  • 10+ years’ experience working in Optical engineering
  • Demonstrated expertise for design and optical system analysis.
  • Demonstrated strong proficiency working in optics in major system development. Demonstrated experience in the review, edit and enhancement of vendor documentation to support operating electro-optic systems, such as operating manuals and concepts of operations.
  • Experience operating prototype electro-optic systems; proficient at recommending systems parameters settings. Experience providing test results documentation.
  • Experience supporting program development documentation such as system requirements documents, concepts of operations, interagency support agreements, operational security plans, deployment plans, and test reports.
  • Experience with Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR)
  • Experience with Space Awareness/Space Domain

Desired:

  • Experience characterizing all types of optical systems.
  • Experience in the design and operation of all types of optical technologies with deep experience in collecting optical performance data from various phenomenologies using a wide variety of sensor platforms is preferred.
  • Systems acquisition experience demonstrating the capability to evaluate system checkout, perform security accreditation, and provide independent documentation to assess the performance and capabilities of vendor developed electro-optical systems.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM related field. Master’s degree preferred

Travel

  • As necessary to vendor facilities to evaluate system checkout, perform security accreditation, and provide independent documentation to assess the performance and capabilities of vendor developed electro-optical systems.
